what
château de josselin, josselin, france
when
2016 on the 13th day of november at 1550 hrs
where
why
possibly the most serendipitous find in all my travels, I ended up at this cute french town by happenstance when looking for historic châteaux to fill excess travel time on a mid november day. ironically, it was so beautiful, it stole more of my day than intended, and I had to drive through backcountry pitch black, windy, single lane, unfamiliar roads to arrive at my airbnb not so fashionably late with a clearly grumpy host who curtly but courteously showed me the space and surprisingly didn't tank my rating (and you thought frenchmen were jerks).
located in the northwest of france on the river l'oust, château de josselin has a storied history. it's been the site of battles, pilgrimages, and pillages, including a demolition led by henry ii himself. for a classic father son project, they tore this beauty down and sowed salt into the ruins. even henry's best efforts couldn't hold it down and in 1370, "the butcher" rebuilt a fortress with eight towers and a hundred yard keep - to this day still a virgin to american football. another partial demolition in 1488 led to the granite façade seen today, an early example of renaissance architecture that attracted italian artisans and artists. in 1629 it was once more dismantled from eight towers to four which finally stood the test of time and still point to the sky today. tickled with himself at said dismantling, cardinal richelieu reportedly announced (initiate dissenting voice with french accent), "my lord, into your game of skittles I have just thrown a good ball!" (nailed it).
